Modern Surveying Technology and Recent Infrastructural Developments in Trinidad and Tobago

0900-0930

Concepts of modern reference stations (Ian Murgatroyd)

The operation of modern geodetic control through continuously operating reference stations. Communication technologies. Management of data and metadata at the control centre. Examples of installations worldwide, and their application.

0930-1000

The GPSTT Stations and web site (Silburn Clarke/Keith Miller)

The Trinidad and Tobago installation. Location of sites, coordination of stations, integrity monitoring and accessing data through the internet. Accuracies achievable using static GPS surveys, and relating control to the Naparima datum.

1000-1015

The VRS link in T&T (Ian Murgatroyd)

Operation of the VRS component with specific reference to the Trinidad and Tobago installation.

1030-1100

Equipment Requirements (Donn Eyeman)

Typical equipment requirements, and costs, necessary to use the Trinidad and Tobago GPS network in survey applications. The focus will be on Trimble products, but specifications will be provided so that this can be placed into a broader manufacturer base.

1100-1200

Questions and Discussion

Following the presentations it is anticipated that there will be a number of questions arising. This is the opportunity for surveyors to ask questions concerning their particular needs for the benefit of all.

1230-1600

Demonstrations

A number of demonstrations will take place with the opportunity for participants to see systems in operation, and access and process data using the GPS network in the Departmental computer laboratory. Activities will include:

Field use of GPS equipment for static and VRS surveys

(Ian Murgatroyd/Donn Eyeman/Anesh Gopee)

Robotic Total Stations (Ian Murgatroyd/Donn Eyeman)

Downloading and processing GPS data using www.gpstt.com (Keith Miller)

Delivery Staff

Key Staff

Keith Miller, Head of Department of Surveying and Land Information, University of the West Indies. Lectures in Geodesy and Hydrography on the undergraduate programme in Surveying and Land Information. Since moving to Trinidad from the UK in 1999, Keith has been actively involved in development of the new infrastructure in Trinidad and Tobago. His primary interest is use of GPS for survey control. He has established points on Caribbean islands regionally, and recently installed permanently operating GPS stations in Antigua, Dominica and St Kitts. A detailed study of the integrity of traditional control on the island of Barbados has recently been completed. He is familiar with regional requirements and is working on provision of resources to better facilitate the use of modern technology.

Ian Murgatroyd, Technical Manager for Trimble Latin America, has extensive experience in providing technology based solutions for surveying applications throughout Central and South America. His expertise in user equipment extends to GPS, robotic total stations, digital levels and scanning instruments. From this stable he is able to identify the optimum solution to meet the demands of a particular task. In a support capacity he follows through with training of qualified surveyors in use of modern equipment, and in trouble shooting application problems. Ian was involved in the design of the new geodetic infrastructure in Trinidad and Tobago, and continues to provide support for the system through remote access.

Silburn Clarke, President, Spatial Innovision, is a Chartered and Commissioned Land Surveyor as well as a professional photogrammetrist who has moved his regional company into the fields of GIS and GPS. Through Spatial Innovision Silburn can provide a fully integrated solution in data acquisition, management and mapping to provide a full package that meets customer requirements. He simultaneously led the Land Management Consortium in successfully executing the cadastral mapping of 23,000 parcels in St. Catherine, Jamaica in 2005. While Spatial is based in Jamaica, they service the needs of the Caribbean and have undertaken GIS based projects throughout the islands as well as providing support for enabling technologies to a regional customer base. Spatial Innovision led the initial assessment, design, installation and commissioning of the Trinidad and Tobago Geodetic Infrastructure and continues to provide post-installation support. They are now keen to inform surveyors on use of the system and to offer advice to users so that its full potential can be realized.

Support Staff

Donn Eyeman – Has worked as the counterpart to Mr Murgatroyd in the US for the 11years and is now responsible for sales for Mexico, Central American and the Caribbean.

Gregory Peake – Provides technical support for Trimble products regionally for Spatial Innovision.

Anesh Gopee – Is a Graduate Research Assistant at the Department of Surveying and Land Information, is trained on Trimble GPS products, and has extensive experience in surveying with GPS in Trinidad and Tobago.
